Apple just announced that its third quarter sales and profits are through the roof due to a faster iPhone and cheaper Macbooks. The company posted a profit of $1.2 billion, with a sales increase of 12% for the quarter ended June 27th.

The main reasons behind this massive increase in sales are the new and improved iPhone 3G, the cut in the prices of older iPhone models as well as the reduction in the prices of the MacBook. The increase in demand for the iPhone combined with the wide profit margin for this product meant that Apple was able to make a hefty profit from sales. Back to school season also means that cutting prices on the MacBook allowed Apple to sell more units, with notebooks making up a quarter of the total sales.
Surprisingly, the weakest link in Appleās strong product lineup is the iPod. The only increase in sales here were for the iPod Touch, which more than doubled, but despite this increase the total iPod sales fell by almost 7%. Apple itself accepts this as a given considering their newer products, the iPod Touch and iPhone, offer the same features as the traditional MP3 players for similar, or lower, prices.
