TechCrunch reported yesterday that Mozilla’s browser had passed 999 million downloads during the morning. It took just about 19 more hours to hit the 1 billion download milestone. As of about 8 AM EST until the 1 billionth download, the browser was being downloaded a remarkable 20+ times per second according to the Firefox Counter Twitter Account.
Last year, the Mozilla Foundation hit a milestone when Firefox 3.0 was downloaded eight million times in its first 24 hours of release, setting a Guinness world record. Firefox has steadily been increasing its userbase since it was first released in 2004. The most recent numbers show Firefox holds 30% of the browser market. A mere 3 years ago, Internet Explorer held 90% of the marketshare.
To mark the occasion, Firefox has launched a new website called One Billion Plus You. The site will go live on August 3rd.
